MicroConstants Celebrates 15 Years
This year, we celebrated a major milestone anniversary. Fifteen years ago, Dr. Gilbert Lam founded MicroConstants with the help of David Beyerlein, who set up our laboratory operations, and Jose Buenviaje, who created and deployed our quality systems. Gilbert, David and Jose still lead the company today.
We began with just six employees, sharing laboratory space with Cytovia, a San Diego biotech company. Our very first client was ILEX in San Antonio, Texas, and we quickly added several California-based clients from the exponential growth being experienced by the San Diego and Bay Area biotech clusters. After a couple years, we outgrew our shared space and moved into our own facility in Sorrento Valley. In 2007, we relocated to the 34,000 square foot facility we currently occupy and are now one of the largest bioanalytical and DMPK specialty CROs on the West Coast of the United States.
“When we started MicroConstants, our goal was to build a contract research organization focused on bioanalysis,” says Gilbert Lam. “Fifteen years later, we have earned a reputation for providing innovative solutions to our sponsors’ tough bioanalytical challenges. I am very proud of this reputation and look forward to many more years of solving the challenges faced by the pharmaceutical and biotech industries we serve”.
In addition to celebrating our milestone anniversary with a party (photos are on our Google+ page), we also revealed a new logo and an updated website.
New Case Study
Biomarker Analysis by LC/MS/MS
Our latest case study describes how we developed an LC/MS/MS method to measure concentrations of a key biomarker directly related to the activity of a biologic by optimizing enzymatic digestion to create a stable derivative.
Prior to optimization, the sponsor was utilizing two separate methods for analysis – an ELISA assay which was not selective to all forms of the derivatized biomarker, and an HPLC/FL method which had a challenging derivatization step followed by a lengthy gradient elution which did not have the sensitivity required to detect endogenous levels of the biomarker. The single LC/MS/MS method developed by our scientists provided more sensitivity, increased selectivity, shorter sample preparation and run times, and a more stable analyte compared to the two previous methods initially being used for analysis.

David Beyerlein, our VP of Global Operations, was interviewed for the Ask the Experts: Outsourcing in a Bioanalytical Laboratory article which appeared in the October issue of Bioanalysis. The Journal invited a selection of leading researchers to express their views on outsourcing bioanalysis, including ways to effectively manage costs while maintaining productivity and quality of work. Their responses provide valuable insight into the impact of outsourcing and the future of the constantly evolving bioanalytical laboratory.

One of our sponsors, Cempra Pharmaceuticals, successfully demonstrated the ability of their antibiotic, solithromycin, to cross the maternal/fetal barrier in a pregnant sheep model. MicroConstants provided the analytical support for this study and David Johnson, Ph.D., our Director of DMPK, contributed to a paper that was published on the story in the December issue of the Journal of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

One of our DMPK scientists, Rishi Sharma, Ph.D., co-authored a paper on Controlled-Deactivation Cannabinergic Ligands which was recently published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. The paper was a result of his graduate research at Northeastern University.

2013 Annual Sponsor Satisfaction Survey Results
The continued support of our sponsors is of extreme importance to us. Therefore, each November, we conduct annual sponsor surveys to measure their level of satisfaction and request feedback on ways we can improve to ensure we are consistently meeting expectations.
Below are some of the results…
- 100% of respondents said they were satisfied or very satisfied with the overall quality of work produced by MicroConstants.
- On a scale of 1 – 5 (5 being very confident) our sponsors gave us a 4.6 for confidence in the quality of data and results provided.
Below are some comments from a couple of the respondents…
- “MicroConstants has saved the day several times. Their analytical team has been able to resolve bioanalytical issues for very tricky compounds. Other labs had tried and failed – MicroConstants had it figured out in a few days. They seem capable of doing what other labs cannot.”
- “What you offer is extremely valuable. In addition to providing reliable, on-time PK analysis, we have greatly appreciated your flexibility and willingness as a Company to prepare kits and provide storage of plasma samples. This has streamlined the process for the Sponsor (fewer vendors), but more importantly for the clinical sites.”
